Katherine Barnes’s process is a metaphor for the act of remembering.
Through painting and drawing, she parallels the way in which the mind registers, preserves, recalls and forgets.
Barnes is interested in the translation of space in a 2-dimensional space; she uses drawing or paint to interpret the essence of image.
In this show, From Inside to Out, the work refers to Gaston Bachelard’s writings in Poetics of Space, a book about the relationship to memory and intimate space.
In his writing, he describes the hidden spaces inside a shell as intimate areas from which the mind can crawl into or expand from.
In this current work, Barnes is looking pass the initial forms to experience the interior spaces and translate their intimate essences.
Katherine Barnes has recently received her MFA in Studio Art at University of South Florida.
