  3. Why?
    1. By year 2020 Latinos will be the largest minority group in the United States
    2. 1/3 of Latinos are uninsured
    3. 8.6 of physician population, 21% of U.S. population
    4. Hispanic physician see 50% more uninsured patients than do their non-Hispanic white colleagues
    5. Disproportionate numbers of adult Hispanics suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and obesity
    6. Meeting the health care needs of Hispanics requires an understanding of their social, cultural, economic, and physical environments
  4. Purpose
    1. To educate and sensitize the entire medical community to the specific needs and differences of Hispanics regarding health and well-being
    2. To promote awareness about social, political, and economic issues as they relate to Hispanic health issues
    3. To promote medical students interest that will lead to the improvement of healthcare for under-served communities
    4. To set up a support network for Hispanic medical students
  5. Student Meetings
    1. Two per semester (?)
    2. Need to contact possible speakers:  Dr. Max Pena, Dr. Humberto Coto, Dr. Rafael Blanco, Dr. Carolina Samper-Pena, Dr. Jorge Otero, Dr. Fernandez, Dr. Garcia (internal medicine), Dr. Eduardo G., Dr. Marcet
    3. Possible topics: history of healthcare in Tampa, need for Hispanic healthcare professionals, AIDS in South America

    1. Krispee Kreme Donut Sale: total profit approx. $91
    2. Bone Marrow Drive w/ Asian-Pacific organization: approx. 50 people showed up
